In an article entitled Millions for Viagra, Pennies for Diseases of the Poor published in The Nation on July 19,1999; Ken Silverstein comments, “Almost three times as many people, most of them in tropical countries of the Third World, die of preventable, curable diseases as die of AIDS. Malaria, tuberculosis, acute lower-respiratory infections--in 1998, these claimed 6.1 million lives. People died because the drugs to treat those illnesses are nonexistent or are no longer effective. They died because it doesn't pay to keep them alive.”

The most devastating diseases of the world can be cured with a simple injection but many in the world choose to turn a blind eye to the suffering of those who are strangers. As Muslims, it is our duty to help those who are in need; the ability to heal people with just a few dollars is an amazing blessing that we are afforded living in the age of technology.
