The Zakat Foundation Indonesia Earthquake Report
Yogyakarta - A strong earthquake which measured from 5.9 to 6.2 on the Richter scale rocked Yogyakarta and its surrounding areas. This earthquake struck at 5:53am local time with an epicenter 37 kilometers to the south of the coastline of Yogyakarta with depth of 33 kilometers.
According to observations by Maimun Nuryadi, the head of PKPU (the local partner of The Zakat Foundation in Yogyakarta), the earthquake caused many buildings to collapse and turned into rubble such structures as a five story building of “STIE Kerjasama” and smaller buildings such as restaurants simply vanished. Many historical buildings of Yogyakarta are facing a similar fate, an old building in Malioboro has collapsed and caused damage to the wall of Kraton (palace) of Yogyakarta. Some other historical buildings such as Prambanan Temple were unable to escape from the earthquake.
While we write this report, the number of dead victims has reached 1000 (by 05/30/2006 victims reached 5000) people and thousands more have been injured while many more are still thought to be trapped under rubble and collapsed buildings. The victims are under medical treatment in hospitals such as Sarjito, Panti Rapih, Bethesba, PKU Muhammadiyah, Hidayatullah, Wirosaban and Bantul Hospitals.
Maimun Nuryadi reported that most of the hospitals are having to treat victims of the earthquake in their parking area. In PKU Muhammadiyah Hospital medical treatment are done in the streets due to a limited number of available rooms, and the nearby Ring Road Hospital can not perform operations at all.
The earthquake did not stop after first wave; it has caused two more aftershocks which ripped the city, the first at 8:00am and the second 10:00am local time. The center of earthquake has a depth of 33 kilometers in Indian Ocean and memories of the 2004 Tsunami have caused great panic to the population. Nevertheless, Maimun worked with the Humanitarian Rescue Team in Yogyakarta directly to run a survey to Parangtritis Beach, then attempted to calm down the population after hearing spreading rumors of a coming tsunami.
The Zakat Foundation and its partner PKPU have constructed an operational post for humanitarian service in Bantul to evacuate victims trapped under rubble of buildings and distribute medicines, hot foods, tents and medical services.
The rescue team was sent from Jakarta to Yogyakarta to help victims to evacuate and to distribute aid. So far the direct aid contains emergency tents, clothes, food packages and a medical team consisting of two pairs of doctors and nurses.

Zakat Foundation donates 100 Heavy-Duty Tents and Most Needed Medicine to Earthquake Victims of Indonesia! Please Help Us Do More!
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah, peace and blessings be with you.
As you may already know, on May 27, 2006 an earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia and killed more than 5000 people. On the southern coast of Java, cities like Bantul and Yogyakarta are the hardest hit.
In December of 2004 a tsunami devastated Indonesia, killing around 200,000 people and much of Indonesia has not yet recovered from this disaster.
The cities are without electricity and telecommunications as homes have been destroyed and people are trying to save their beloved family members from the rubble with their bare hands.
By the grace of God (SWT), The Zakat Foundation has been able to organize its efforts with local organizations and have donated 100 tents and desperately needed medical supplies. We do need your help urgently.
What can you do?
- Please pray for the victims and their families either as an individual du’a or in the Mosques as a group.
- $10 will deliver hot meals to the victims
- $200 will provide a heavy-duty tent for a family
- Donate for more medical supplies and care.
