Dear Brother/Sister, Assalamu Alaikum,

As Americans it may be difficult to imagine what life is like for the nearly 12 million people living in Niger, one of the poorest countries in the world. UNDP's Human Development and Human Poverty Indices rank it 173rd out of 174 countries, making it the second poorest country in the world. The majority of the people live on less than US$ 1 per day.

Add to that situation a year with a plague of locusts and insufficient rainfall. Swarms of desert locusts consumed nearly 100 percent of the crops in some areas during 2004 and is still ongoing! Additionally, insufficient rainfall severely affected both farmers and livestock breeders in many areas of the country.

The result?

  • 3.6 million lives are currently endangered
  • the rate of malnutrition is 40 percent (in best estimates)
  • 800,000 children under the age of five are severely threatened by malnutrition
  • 80 children die each day

The people of the world must mobilize to provide humanitarian assistance to the millions affected. Towards this effort, The Zakat Foundation has allocated $20.000, and has dispatched a team to provide emergency relief efforts for those most at risk in this disaster. They are already in Niger and compiling a list of goods and their prices which can best used to reverse this inhumane situation.

Your donation to Zakat Foundation at this time is the key to allowing us to meet the needs of our brothers and sisters affected by this horrific situation. Please donate to help these children. You can donate online using a credit card, mail your check to the address above or call us at 1-866-499-6151 today.

Thank you,

Khalil Demir,
President
