Parched land stretches out as far as the eye can see in many areas across Somalia, but now the barren land is dotted with fountains of hope as wells provide the basis for life on Earth across Somalia. The dire need for this source of life in the Horn of Africa was answered by many relief organizations including The Zakat Foundation of America. The effort in the summer of 2006 is only the most recent and prolific action by The Zakat Foundation in our ongoing mission to provide clean drinking water to people across the world.
Many villages in Africa have gone 16 years without clean water, leading to several illnesses and a high infant mortality rate. For many of these people it is a decision of walking five to ten miles for clean water or drinking the filth that animals have bathed in. Often times the young children, who have received food from going to school, are the only ones healthy enough to make this long journey to get water for their families.

It is necessary that we continue to provide clean water to all communities in the world that are deprived of it. Digging a well can also be a wonderful source of Sadaqa Jariya and can be named for yourself or a loved one. For only $3,000 a well can be dug in seemingly barren land. Water is such a simple thing to many of us, yet is more valuable than gold to others.
